From 'Pit Bottom' to 'The New Era'
Starting at 'Pit Bottom'
From the age of 14, Colin started to work for his Dad 'Clem Edley' at his small car breakers yard at Pit Bottom on Winterton Road, Scunthorpe. Selling a wide range of second hand car parts, and dismantling old scrapped cars. This is where the dream began. Cars would be stripped of their brass headlights and copper radiators ready to be weighed in at Hills Brothers, where the scrap value was only £4 per tonne!
Colin recalls the hard graft that was needed to 'break' a car ready for weighing in, the use of an axe and pure strength was all that was used to chop cars up back then.
Colin knew that there was room for growth following this time with his Dad and made sure his dreams and ideas would come true.

Kirton Days
Colin left pit bottom in around 1975 where he went on to buy a larger area of land opening his own yard ' COL EDLEY: Motor Dismantlers' on Railways, Station Road, Kirton in Lindsey.
The land was home to a large reservoir which Colin filled in, with the help of local tradesman bit by bit, until it was eventually filled, levelled and fenced by himself ready for his ideas to unfold.
His brother Graham later joined him at Kirton, moving on and expanding into the commerical and car sales field. With their on-site workshop they started to offer further services in panel beating, welding, body repairs and prepping used cars ready for M.O.T and resale.
Used cars were bought for as little as £7. Some of which included; Morris Minors, Ford Anglias and Austin 835s.
Working 6 and a half days a week, Colin was determined to make this work.
His biggest achievements here were being able to buy his own work vehicles, proving that small ideas can infact grow into something much bigger.

Scotter Bottom
1988 saw the birth of R C EDLEY! What started as waste land was soon transformed into a larger scale salvage yard.
Colin set up home here by living in a small caravan and building his empire around him.
With a forecourt selling used cars or accident damaged cars as 'spares or repairs', where customers could buy cars that had been fixed by the lads at Edley's.
Colin has always been a well known, reliable figure within the community and word of mouth of his new venture soon spread resulting in further expansions, further land sought out and multiple building built to house even more of his ideas, the recovery service was just one of them.
In the more established days, Edleys became a well known place to get your spare parts, scrap your car or buy a used car.

The Legacy Continues
The next generation of Edleys was introduced in 2011, when Charlie came to the helm and has helped Colin embrace the modern era and taken the yard and what it offers from strength to strength. R C EDLEY CAR BREAKERS was created in 2013 and has absolutely made its mark on scunthorpe and the surrounding areas. The onsite part worn tyre shop and recovery and storage services have been the latest strings to the bow.
Continuing on from the early days, the main focus is to keep the spirit of 'car breakers' and 'scrapyards' alive, buying in multiple makes and models daily for breaking, selling parts for fair prices and keeping the environment sustainable for the future generations to come.
This isnt the end of the expansion for R C EDLEY CAR BREAKERS... sit back and watch this space.
